I didn't do particularly well at school. I was no fool, I just wasn't sure why I was there. I left with one GCE O level in guess what? .. metalwork! that's what! So I was destined for a career in the Steel Works. When you were an apprentice at Consett they sent you to Consett technical college on a "day release" and a night class. I took an extra night class and got an O level in English Language. I did so well in this more adult form of education that I got a prize for being top student of my year (see below) Mind you this was soon to change too when nightclasses were replaced with nights rehearsing and playing with my band.
