These fields are
memories
The pictures below were
sent by Les Scurr who still lives in Consett. In Steel Town the
musical a young man dreams of escaping the works to a world of
music in his rock band. These were my dreams when I was an
apprentice at Consett Works. Les was the roadie with my band
back then, some 30 years ago and we recently re-made our acquaintance
through the Internet. I've heard of finding long lost relatives
on the Internet but long lost roadies! Anyway,
les your contribution to these pages is most welcome. We can't
re-build Steel Town but we can commemorate it. Any comment by me
to these images is marked (ST) and from Les (LS) why
not send your own comment.

Hounsgill today from the red

Same
spot but looking the other way to what was the entrance to
Templetown Brickworks. At the extreme left of the picture
the first house
to be built on this site is near completion. This site
went through a lot
of de-toxification in the last few years. Couldn't fancy
living there
could you? McClean have just started building homes on it.

Sextant
& Telescope I think. Made out of aluminium.
Consett's
legacy of Iron & Steel? This is on the cycle track
which used to be the
railway line in your picture of Hounsgill. They are
perched in the top
corner overlooking Hounsgill Industrial Park as it's now known.
(LS) These
struck me as totally irrelevant to 140 years of steelmaking.

I related this to Tom Kelly and the view was reflected in some
more lines from
"I Will Go Back" - These fields are
memories
As silent as the grave
No future do I see
No statue to the brave
("I Will Go Back" from Steeltown)
